May 2025

May was a wild month of transition and new chapters. I turned 30 this month and went through all the melodramatic male reflection that comes with that. I was very thankful to have a few days to celebrate with friends and family—that’s the best part about a birthday: intentional time with those you love. Katie was so kind and planned a wonderful day with great moments and gifts, including an espresso machine that has now ruined me. I’ve gotten deep into the world of tamping, WDT tools, and all the fun that comes with espresso construction.

We spent our birthday date drinking coffee, going bowling, attending the Mimms Museum of Technology and Art, and finally enjoying the main event: dinner at the Speak Easy Supper Club. That was one of the best dining experiences of my life—such a unique and fun take on fine dining. We’ve already gotten tickets for the next go-around.

We were then able to celebrate with friends and family leading into Mother’s Day and the conclusion of the school year. We also welcomed a new foster child into the home this month—a small kiddo less than a year old. They have been a treat to have, and it’s certainly a learning experience getting a baby this young who you know nothing about and who can’t tell you anything.

We purchased half a cow with a neighbor, and that has been just incredible. It’s awesome knowing where your beef comes from, and you get to try some more unique cuts of meat that I would never buy on a whim.

We fished this month more than we ever have—and didn’t catch jack. So I have plenty of learning to do. We bowled, attended Louie’s end-of-year dance recital, and went to Little Alley with the boys. We also went to the Laughing Skull Lounge for open mic night and saw maybe 2 out of 30 funny acts. It was a disaster.

Got to see the Dodgers and Shohei Ohtani in person with my dad and George. As the Dodgers ended an inning, Yamamoto either handed the ball to one of the infielders or they had it after a groundout, and they tossed it right over the net to a kind gentleman right in front of us. He caught the ball and promptly handed it to George. The little guy got a Major League ball at his first baseball game — so cool.

Best and Worst of the month:

  • Best thing I watched, read, or listened to: Andor S2

  • Worst thing I watched, read, or listened to: Outdoor Boy’s Goodbye Video

  • Best experience of the month: Speak Easy Supper Club, seeing the Dodgers in person, Little Alley

  • Best thing I ate: the caked up blue grits from Chef Kyle, Dry-aged strip at Little Alley, smoked Chuck Roast from Hillside Farms
